I cannot imagine my life without art. The stack of coloring books my Nana would buy me at Lundy’s 5 & 10, the self portrait with turquoise hair that hangs in my high school’s permanent collection, the Matisse/Dali inspired figure with the windy road 3D painting, the ten minute nude studies in oil paints, the too tiny to drink out of tea cups, countless seashells studies, button frames, friendship bracelets, chiseled rocks, magazine collage boxes, hats decorated in silk flowers, pillows from old shirts, wooden puzzle boxes, tissue paper garland, van dyke browns from xray film and more. It didn’t take me long to figure it out.
I am an artist. I love to create. From an early age that much was obvious. I have tried my hand in just about every type of art/craft/medium project you can think of . I am classically trained in painting (watercolor, acrylic, oil) and color & graphite pencil drawing. I love design, color & texture. And I have even taken piano & dance lessons. I also have a BFA degree in my first & greatest love – photography. But I will always be an artist first.
In a fantastic world there would be enough hours in the day for me to create all the projects I have in my head, handmade gifts for everyone I know and a specialized craft supply store on every corner of town. There would also be enough space in my house to create & craft with room to eat at the kitchen table without disturbing drying glue or tiny beads patterned for a bracelet. But then a question arises. Without those challenges would the creative process still be just as rewarding? hmm
I can look at the various art pieces made throughout my life & remember exactly what my life was like & how I felt when that piece was created. Studying art leaves me inspired. It gives me a greater respect for all forms of art and especially the artists that create them. Each piece is that is handmade gives us a glimpse of who that artist is & what the artist wants to share with us. Art moves us. It makes us laugh & cry. It gives us faith & energy. It creates a challenge, defines a moment, and sometimes leaves us asking ‘what the?’
Art documents history. It defines us as human beings and teaches us about the world around us. It is a wonderful & fantastic expression of who we were, are and want to be. I cannot imagine my life without art. I am an artist.
